Why don’t we recycle food waste as well?
• WE recently moved from Hackney and noticed that there was a different policy in Camden for recycling from the one operating in Hackney and the adjoining borough, Islington.
In those boroughs, householders are issued with a special bin for food waste – the stuff you’d put on your compost heap if you had a garden. These bins were put out at the same time as the general recycling material – newspapers, bottles and so on which had their own container.
As I understand it, the food waste was used for fertilising and composting publicly owned spaces.
When I first came to Camden I emailed the council about this and was told “they’d think about it”.
It makes a huge difference to the quantity of rubbish to separate out and recycle food waste, and it contributes to green living.
Could the CNJ perhaps canvas opinion and put pressure on the council if others also think this is a good idea?
