Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 February 2007

What a brilliant idea

• ON Sunday January 28 a new meaning was given to a phrase. Camden;s Recycling Team organised Give and Take. This fantastic event took place at the Hampstead Community Centre. The principal is simple – bring something you don’t want in the morning and take something you do need in the afternoon.
More than 400 people attended and at times it was like a BBC nature program on ants a constant stream of items coming and going including televisions to teddy bears. It was good to see the high quality of goods coming in and the pleasure of those who found a treasure to take home, the whole event also engendered a warm sense of community spirit.
I spoke to many of those who attended and the main comments were “this is a great idea” and “when’s the next one” the answer is in April and the venue will announced shortly.
The serious side of the day was to encourage recycling and to divert unwanted items away from landfill, which saves land pollution and the cost of disposal, which is to all our benefits.
The unwanted goods were all logged on arrival and the weight will be calculated which I hope will be in tonnes.
Congratulations Camden and thanks to 16 the officers and volunteers who gave up their Sunday to run the event.
