Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 February 2007

British ‘racism’

• I WAS interested to read the interview with Dr Jonathan Miller (‘Watch Big Brother to see we’re a lousy lot’, Jan 25) in which the opening paragraph mentions that the row over Celebrity Big Brother “took the manhole cover off the subterranean dirty currents of British racism,” as Dr Miller told an audience at Burgh House last Thursday.

My only disagreement is the use of the term ‘British racism’. As far as I can recall all of Miss Shetty’s tormentors were English and there is no evidence that racism is as big a problem in say Wales or Scotland as it is in England.
This accepted, does it really help England deal with its racism if we allow England to hide under the cover of ‘Britishness’?
