One way held up

TOWN Hall environment chiefs upheld a controversial decision to introduce a one-way system uphill on College Crescent from Finchley Road to Fitzjohn’s Avenue on Tuesday.
The decision, originally agreed at a meeting at the Town Hall last November as part of a Safer Routes to School scheme, had been challenged by three Lib Dem councillors – Alexis Rowell, Arthur Graves and Chris Basson – and Green Maya de Souza. They said the proposal had not been put out to consultation.
They also argued that the scheme did not have “adequate regard for the needs and safety of cyclists” – and called for the decision to be discussed again by environment chiefs.
But the Town Hall’s environment sub-committee decided to uphold its original decision at the meeting on Tuesday – despite hearing strong pleas from cyclists against the proposal.
Richard Fletcher from the Camden Cycling Campaign said: “We concede that the status quo is not an option but one way uphill is inconceivable as a decision to make the road safer.”
