Station ‘ground zero’ alert
THE owner of the historic Electric Ballroom nightclub has warned how Camden Town could be turned into a “ground zero” building site by plans to redevelop the Tube station.
Kate Fuller, who manages the club in Camden High Street, described her fresh fight against the bulldozers as “groundhog day”.
She spoke out on Friday as Camden Council began gathering views on how Camden Town Tube station – one of the busiest in London – should be revamped. Planners are putting together a draft design brief for the station which the council expects Transport for London (TfL) to work towards.
Ms Fuller, whose family have owned the ballroom next to the station since the 1930s, fears TfL will use the opportunity to revive its bid to seize the land surrounding the station through compulsory purchase orders. She said: “Transport for London’s ideas for the site would change the nature of the heart of Camden Town and reduce the number of people coming to the area.
“It would turn the centre of Camden Town into a building site – a ground zero – for years.”
Environment chief Tory councillor Mike Greene said: “The draft planning brief will help the council ensure any future redevelopment is of top-quality design and has the right mix of uses, and that the impacts on the town centre are fully considered.”
Camden’s survey ends on February 16.
