Battle to save ‘iconic’ mural

AN ICONIC symbol of Camden Town is under threat after Network Rail applied to cover it with an advertising billboard.
The famed bridge mural in Chalk Farm Road of a workman on a swing could be hidden away behind two illuminated advertising panels if the rail company is given the go-ahead by the council.
American media company Clear Channel, who specialise in billboards, lodged an application with the Town Hall in December on behalf of Network Rail. They want to place boards on both sides of the bridge.
The council had been planning to refresh the mural on the south side and replace the estate agents’ advert on the north side with artwork.
Ward Councillor Libby Campbell says “it would be an absolute travesty” to cover the mural.
“As a symbol of Camden Town itself people need to know about this application so they can object.”
Professor Bill Fulford, director of the company which runs the Lock Market, said: “The existing artwork on the bridge forms an iconic image, recognised worldwide and highly valued by residents, businesses and visitors alike.
“It is one of the most photographed images in London.”
Planning chiefs will hold a public meeting to decide on the application.
