Shock as baths shut for three years

SWIMMERS have been stunned by news that their favourite pool will close in just six weeks and not re-open for three years.
Camden Council has brought forward refurbishment work on the Prince of Wales Baths in Kentish Town – leading to the sudden closure date of February 25, announced for the first time on Monday.
The £22.7 million work is one of the key commitments that helped the Liberal Democrats storm last year’s council elections.
Leisure chief Councillor Flick Rea said it was impossible to put a definite time limit on the work but that she was pleased to be getting on with the scheme.
Council officials are working on the basis that the baths will re-open in 2010.
But swimmers say that the pool should be kept open until the last possible minute and possibly even while some of the less disruptive work is being done.
Pool regular Jane Brett-Jones said: “The sudden and cynical closure of the Kentish Town baths in February beggars belief.
“It is not credible that building work could begin imminently on a project that has not yet even begun public consultation.
“The process of drawing up plans, receiving planning permission, agreeing tenders etc. will take months, if not years, before any building work begins. During this time the centre could and should remain open for local people to use.”
