A maverick who spoke his mind
• I WAS pleased to see you acknowledge the work of Andi Engel who died on Boxing Day (Farewell to screen giant, page 23). As you pointed out Artificial Eye have had an important role in Camden providing independent cinema in the face of tough commercial opposition.
I have worked with them over a long period as a graphic designer and in recent years Andi and I worked closely together in producing ‘Enthusiasm’ which celebrated independent cinema.
A magazine he first produced in 1974 he came to me some 30 years later to design issue two as he put it.
It was an interesting and at times volatile collaboration, but one which was ultimately more rewarding than many in the design world. This was because Andi was a maverick. He spoke his mind (often uninvited) and was a passionate advocate of social responsibility.
That we benefited in some small way through Artificial Eye’s presence in Camden was due to his efforts along with his fellow directors Pamela Engel and Robert Beeson.
