The talented youngsters who qualified for the academy
Academy football training

SCORES of promising young footballers turned out at Market Road on Tuesday for the chance to earn a place within a professional training academy.
More than 40 youngsters took part in a two-hour open session held by the Pro Touch Soccer Academy (PTSA), an organisation aimed at helping disadvantaged players fulfil their dreams of making it in the often-harsh world of football.
The 12 to 14-year-olds were put through their paces in a series of intense matches and gruelling training drills. In the end, coaches whittled down the numbers before inviting just 18 players back to join the academy.
The elite squad will now start working with a team of qualified coaches where they will be helped to understand every aspect within the beautiful game, from training and dietary advice to preparing for big matches and how to handle the media.
Afterwards PTSA director Ash Rahman couldn’t hide his delight. He said: “The turnout was overwhelming. It’s taken me over eight years to get an academy up and running and to be able to offer youngsters help making it as professional footballers.
“To get so many talented players from across Camden and Islington taking an interest in the academy was simply amazing.”
Despite the overwhelming turnout, some things never change – 40 youngsters, countless wannabe strikers and not a goalkeeper in sight.
