Labour parking U-turn

LABOUR’S leader in Camden has ruled out a return to car clamping if her party win back power.
Councillor Anna Stewart said yesterday (Wednesday): “It is clear that people felt that some aspects of our parking policy were too harsh and that we were not listening to them.
“Opposition gives us time to reflect and review our policies, which we will be doing over the coming year. Personally, I find it difficult to imagine any circumstances in which we would want to reintroduce clamping.”
Her message is similar to the apologetic response to parking issues trailed by Sam McBratney, the Labour candidate in the recent Kentish Town by-election. His stance, however, could not prevent the Liberal Democrats storming to victory. The Lib Dems now have the most seats at the Town Hall and hold power in coalition with the Conservatives.
Labour members are not even questioning £300,000 paid to parking contractors NCP to remove the clamping component from its contract with Camden.
Deputy Labour leader Councillor Theo Blackwell added: “If that’s what it costs to end something that most people saw was unfair then we’ll go along with it. There is still a long way to go for the new administration to fulfil their pledge to solve parking problems in Camden.”
