Death still a mystery

Friends and family of Faisal demand answers from the police

DETECTIVES have ordered a second post-mortem as part of their investigation into the death of a Camden Town man found dead in a river.
Hotel worker Faisal Osman, 24, had been missing for ten days before he was discovered in the Waterworks section of the River Lea in Stratford, east London, on December 20.
It was the second tragedy in less than 12 months to strike his family as his death follows the knife murder of his brother, Mahir Osman, 18, in Camden High Street, Camden Town last January.
Relatives are still trying to piece together how Faisal Osman (pictured right) ended up in the water or how long he had been there. New Year’s Day would have been his 25th birthday but family spent it in mourning.
Friends, disappointed at how little information has been released, have repeated their calls for police to investigate guests at the party that he had been to in Hackney on the night he went missing.
They believe that at some stage in the evening Mr Osman was involved in an argument – possibly over a girl – and later chased through the streets.
One close friend said: “I remember friends of Faisal were searching for him before they heard any news. Everyone knew something wasn’t right. A 24-year-old grown man going missing for that long, in an area that wasn’t his own and didn’t know anyone?
“He was always in Camden and that included when he was working too. He was never too far away and you’d always catch him on the Lock. Frankly everyone’s lost hope – including the family from lack of information.”
Police have stopped short of launching a murder inquiry and the case is currently marked: ‘Unexplained’, in the offices of Feltham CID.
One source said: “It could be that he had a heart attack or that he was intoxicated. We don’t know at this stage.”
Pathologists carried out a post-mortem just before Christmas but forensic experts could not reach a conclusion on how Mr Osman had died.
A police spokeswoman said: “There will be a second post-mortem to establish the cause of death. It was unlikely that this could have been done over Christmas. We need more test results. This isn’t unusual. It does take some time and they go as quickly as they can. At the moment it is classified as an unexplained death.”
She said that an appeal for witnesses would be circulated in the east London area today (Thursday).
Mr Osman lived in Gilbey’s Yard, Camden Town, with his mother and younger brother Adil. He had complained that the police had not investigated his brother’s murder properly and warned that detectives were pre-occupied by tracking links to gangs of Somali teenagers.
