Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 January 2007

Thanks for your help in gas crisis

JUST days before Christmas the gas supply to well over 200 homes on the Maiden Lane Estate failed. This meant that these households would have no cooking facilities over the holiday period.
Many of these were the homes of old or infirm people – or were homes where there were young children.
This emergency will be investigated in due course, but the priority was supplying alternative cooking facilities to those affected.
The staff on the estate and volunteers from the estate management board rose to this occasion. On the first day, for example, the estate office was manned till 11.30pm.
Estate staff cheerfully gave up parts of their own holiday to help out residents as electric cooking rings and microwave ovens were purchased, delivered and distributed.
Throughout this time, the engineers, headed by Harry Yates and John Stow, worked tirelessly investigating the initiating problem and capping off the 200 plus gas appliances.
Imtiyaz Bobat’s estate staff are to be heartily thanked, as are the management board volunteers, for their enormous efforts.
DR PETER PRESTON
Vice-chairman
Maiden Lane Estate Management Board

• Half of Maiden Lane’s 470 homes have, unfortunately, been without gas for cooking since December 21.
These incidents so often seem to come at the worst of times.
I’d like to publicly praise three groups of people. Maiden Lane estate office’s Imtiyaz Bobat and his team, Harry Yates, housing services manager and his crew, and the residents for showing resilience, patience and understanding.
Unfortunately, if the 26-year-old steel gas pipes are found to be corroded, reinstatement may take weeks rather than days but the first priority was to make sure everything possible was done for Christmas.
Having witnessed first hand the operation, I can tell you that these guys did a great job. Congratulations all around!
